MISSISSAUGA, Canada—Township of Perth East Deputy Mayor Hugh McDermid enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Living Arts Centre on March 24.

“It is very unique, and I think most people don’t realize the technique that they have to have to dance that way,“ said Mr. McDermid. ”It was beautiful. A lot of training.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 by leading Chinese artists and quickly became the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Now, with eight equally sized companies that tour the world simultaneously, Shen Yun is on a mission to revive traditional Chinese culture and the beauty of China before communism.
Mr. McDermid saw many traditional values such as truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance in Shen Yun’s performance that he feels are very important.
“I think that’s something that’s universal, and I think it was well brought out,” said Mr. McDermid. “I find that it’s more and more lacking as we go on, and it’s nice to go back to that and see some of that, back to the tradition.
“It’s always important for all people to have a tradition and value it,” he added. “If you don’t see what you come from, then you don’t realize, and you don’t learn. So to have that, that you can go back to and see, it kind of brings it to the forefront. And you learn, and you see what different generations have had to go through and how much we have lost and not gained. So I think it’s important.”
