A resident of Chongqing found a miniature snake while sweeping the corridor of his home. The earthworm-like snake measured only 8 centimeters (3 inches) long, and 0.3 centimeters (.1 inch) in diameter. Experts identified it as a blind snake, the world’s smallest snake.

According to Chongqing Business Daily, Mr. Wu believed he had come upon a specimen of the world’s smallest snake, as reported by the media, and began to take care of it.

Reportedly, the tiny snake feeds on decayed substances. Wu tried to feed it with dead flies and rotten tomatoes; however, after six days, the snake still had not eaten anything.

Jiang Guofu, a Lecturer at the School of Life Science in Southwest University, confirmed that the miniature snake was indeed the world’s smallest snake.

The snake is found in the southwestern region of China. Changes to the farmlands over the past 20 years have made it a rare sight.

Wu said that he would donate the snake to Southwest University for research after the snake dies.
