Firecracker “pops” that sounded like gunfire were reported just outside of the White House on Monday night, according to reports.
The gunfire erupted at around 6:30 p.m., and it forced the White House to lock down, according to AFP and the Fox News.
Fox reported that a suspect was taken down after the incident.
A man was arrested after he apparently threw firecrackers over the White House fence, Reuters reported.
Uniformed agents told bystanders to go into the White House after the shots were fired.
A federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press that the shoeless man was immediately arrested Monday.
An AP photographer caught the incident, and said the firecrackers sounded like gunfire.
The man, who was middle-aged, was arrested without incident. His white shoes were on the ground near where an officer tackled him.
The incident took place after a man opened fire on the Washington Navy Yard, killing 13.
