The husband of a Burbank elementary school teacher who police suspect was killed by her son in her home May 7 says her death is a “loss to the world.”

Vince Lombardo was out of town when his wife Karen Lombardo, 57, was found dead in their home on the 800 block of North Avon Street at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The couple’s adult son, Kyle Lombardo, 25, was arrested on suspicion of murder by Burbank police.

“It’s a loss to the world,” Mr. Lombardo told KTLA 5.

The two had been married for 31 years and had two children together. Ms. Lombardo had been a teacher in Burbank for over 30 years and had a significant following in the city, her husband said.

“I always called her the unofficial mayor of Burbank,” he told the news station.

Mr. Lombardo said he last spoke to his wife Tuesday night, before the altercation. He was staying overnight in Lake Arrowhead.

“We texted and everything was fine,” he said.

Police allege Kyle Lombardo caused his mother’s death during a fight in the family home “based on information obtained and evidence at the scene.”

According to Vince Lombardo, their son lived at the home and had a mental condition. The police have been called to their home in the past because of it, he said.

“She loved him more than anything and tried to help him,” he told the news station. “All of her students love her.”

Ms. Lombardo was a kindergarten teacher at Bret Harte Elementary School in the Burbank Unified School District, according to media reports.

A memorial of flowers and notes was growing outside the elementary school Wednesday as families, students, and parents memorialized her.

School district Supt. John Paramo sent a message to district families on Wednesday, describing her as a beloved educator in the community.

Kyle Lombardo is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.
