What would you do if you were at your job and you came across someone you didn’t think would be able to pay? Would you kick them out? Ignore them? Or would you be willing to give up some of your own money to provide for them?

One waitress chose the last option, in a heartwarming story shared on

It was just a regular work day for Maria until an old homeless man came in. He reportedly had a distinct odor and walked around with a cane.

The homeless man took a seat at a table but nobody wanted to serve him, nobody except Maria.

“My name is Maria,” she said. “If you need something let me know and I’ll make sure you get it.”

According to Vuntu, other members of the wait staff were upset with her and suggested she kick the man out of the restaurant. Yet Maria stuck to her guns and continued to serve the man. Her manager warned her that, if he couldn’t pay, she’d have to pay out of pocket. Still, she was undeterred.

Fortunately, Maria didn’t need to pay for the man.

Once he had finished eating, he not only paid for his meal but left a $100 tip as well! Maria was shocked, to say the least, but the biggest surprise was written out on a note under an empty plate.

The note said, “Dear Maria, I respect you very much and can see that you respect yourself … It is evident in the way you treat others, you have found the secret of happiness, your kind gestures will guide and others who know you.”

When she got to the name at the bottom of the note, she melted. It was the owner of the restaurant!

Apparently, he had disguised himself to see how his staff would respond to the situation. Not much can be said for Maria’s coworkers but she passed with flying colors!

What’s more, that $100 was just a drop in the bucket compared to what she received next. The owner promoted her to manager!

We’re not sure if this story actually happened, but nonetheless, it’s a beautiful reminder that we should treat everyone we come across with equal kindness and respect.
