Kate Donovan or Worwickshire, England is the owner of a beagle named Bilbo Baggins.

One day, when her son and husband were taking him on a walk, Bilbo heard a loud noise. He got distracted and decided to walk towards it. Unfortunately, that noise led him to the middle of the road where he was run over by a car. He had fractured his spine.

“At that particular point, they didn’t know whether his spinal cord had been severed and they didn’t know whether he was going to survive,” Donovan said.

At first, she decided that putting Bilbo down would be the least cruel option but, when Donovan told the vets this, their reply was “Don’t give up on him yet. There may be something we can do.”

Bilbo ended up getting surgery, although this didn’t completely fix the problem. Donovan had started researching ways to get Bilbo walking again and came across a set of walking wheels. She ordered them and tested them on Bilbo. He absolutely loved them!

“He was just exactly the same as he was before the accident,” Donovan said. “He was playing. He was smiling… We could feel that he was already starting to move his legs.”

During this time, a woman named Donna Retchington offered to help by setting up a GoFundMe for Bilbo. Her campaign was able to raise over £1,000 to get Bilbo acupuncture and water therapy. This was a huge help.

“He’s now putting his paws on the floor,” Donovan said. “He’s still supported by his wheels but he’s using his legs properly.”

Since 2015, there hasn’t been much word on how Bilbo has progressed but Donovan seemed confident when she said “we’ll make sure he will” recover in 6 months to a year.
