‘Unbearable’ Smelling Passenger Who Caused Plane Emergency Landing Dies of Tissue Necrosis
A man who caused a Transavia flight to make an emergency landing in Portugal died from tissue necrosis, according to De Telegraaf.
The passenger was identified as Russian rock musician Andrey Suchilin, who had contracted an infection while on the Canary Islands during a vacation. The infection caused body tissue to die, resulting in the smell, according to the Daily Mail.
The odor made people faint and vomit before the plane made an emergency landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands.
Suchilin’s wife, Lidia, said that her husband was told by medical officials that it was just an “ordinary beach infection” and was given antibiotics, according to Newsweek. But his condition got worse on the flight.
Belgian passenger Piet van Haut, who was on the plane, told the Express that it seemed as if the man smelled as if he had not bathed in “several weeks.”
“It was like he hadn’t washed himself for several weeks. Several passengers got sick and had to puke,” van Haut said.
“The smell made me think that the man hadn’t washed for weeks,” he also told VRT, a local broadcaster in Belgium, according to a translation of his comments. “Eventually we landed in Amsterdam with almost three hours delay,” Van Haut added. “Nobody could stand the stench. Everyone tried to cover his nose.”
Airline crew members kept the man contained in the bathroom while the pilot diverted the flight.
The plane landed in Faro, Portugal, and he was placed on a bus by medical officials.
Transavia said that the emergency landing took place due to “medical reasons,” Fox reported. “The aeroplane diverted because of medical reasons, but it is indeed right that he smelled quite a bit,” a Transavia representative said.
Suchilin wrote in a Facebook post on May 30 that his health insurance had expired and he and his wife were in a country with no “money, consulate support, and medical care,” People magazine reported. “The tragic and comic component of this whole situation is that I caught a disease, which (let’s not say how and why) makes a man quite stinky,” Suchilin added.
On June 2, Lidia wrote an update saying that after undergoing surgery, the “tissue necrosis couldn’t be stopped yet,” and that her husband was placed in a coma. His condition got worse and he died on June 25 after the necrosis spread to his lungs, kidneys, and heart.
