A U.K. woman died about three days after she got married—weeks after she was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer.
Five weeks after she was told that her cancer was terminal, her husband, Will Arnold, proposed to her.
Arnold added that her “symptoms continued and the doctor said they would look into it further,” adding that experts believed it “was probably gallstones so they referred her for a scan.”
But then, they found that it was much worse.
“We carried on as normal until Katie felt a lot of pain at work one day and was told to go to A&E. There they did an X-ray and kept her in that night having found something on the scan,” he told the website. “We were told the next day she had bowel cancer and that it had already spread to her liver. We were just in complete shock but Katie stayed amazingly strong and positive.”
He added, “We were so proud of Katie in her last few weeks and seeing her dealing with it so well was inspiring. On the other hand seeing her health deteriorate so quickly was just so hard to see.”
“I don’t think she wanted to accept it. You never think it’s going to be cancer, you always just assume it’s something minor,” he said. “But the doctors said she might have had it for quite a while but just never had any of the normal symptoms.”
The wedding was organized in two weeks. They got married in August. Three days later, she died in hospice care.
The 38-year old added: “It was amazing to do it in the time we had. She looked beautiful. I didn’t think she was going to have the energy to keep going for as long as she did, but we danced all night and she chatted to everyone. It was a perfect day and she had a great time with all her family and friends.”
According to the U.K. health agency, “bowel cancer is sometimes called colon or rectal cancer.”
