A U.K. homeowner fended off a gang of machete-wielding robbers after they broke into his home, according to reports.

David Pugh, 55, from the West Midlands in England, was asleep when they broke inside his home at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, according to The Metro.

He found them threatening his 17-year-old son and his dog with machetes, bats, and golf clubs. He managed to fight them off, and they didn’t take anything.

He sustained facial injuries during the incident. Selfies that he took showed him bloodied, in the Daily Mail.  (Warning: Graphic content)

The Metro reported that he broke his nose.

“By the time I got out of bed, totally naked, I was approaching the door and it was kicked in. There was four or five guys on the landing in balaclavas,” Pugh said. “I grabbed the first couple I could and it turned into a brawl and a battle. I just grabbed what I could and hit them with aftershave bottles and chairs.”

Pugh has trained in in Krav Maga, a type of Israeli martial arts used by the country’s military. “Instinct took over,” he explained.

“I was desperately trying to get to my son’s room but I had so many splits to my head, I was drenched in blood,” he added. “They must have thought they half-killed me. In retrospect we were probably quite lucky.”

He added: “We could only assume they saw that, realized we hadn’t got any money and thought ‘we have gone too far’ and got out of there.”

Pugh told the BBC that police had told him there’s a growing trend of “home invasion”-style robberies.

“It leaves a nasty feel around the house. It all happened so fast,” he added. “They [police] were shocked by the level of violence used.”
