Two sisters were killed in a car crash on I-20 in Texas on March 2.
The series of accidents took place near mile marker 290 just after 8:15 a.m.
Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge said in a press conference that the first accident was a heavy utility vehicle that lost its rear axle and wheels, causing it to flip over then roll off the embankment.
“The utility truck ultimately loses control and rolls completely off the interstate onto the embankment on westbound lane of Interstate 20,” Standridge said.
All motorists were funneled into a single lane.
The family’s vehicle was traveling slowly in the lane but the truck hit them because the truck driver failed to slow down, Standridge said.
A police officer driving in the area witnessed the full-sized quad cab Dodge that “never does slow down” slam into the family’s vehicle, he said.
Their mother was rushed to Hendrick Medical Center and is expected to survive.
The driver of the truck involved in the initial accident was hospitalized but expected to survive.
The condition of the driver of the truck that slammed into the family’s vehicle is unclear.
Standridge asked the community to pray for the families involved and be mindful of the police officers, firefighters, EMS, and tow truck drivers.
“You never get accustomed to it, but what you do is you just go into work mode. There’s a ton of work. You process everything through a work model. Is it healthy? Probably not. But that’s what we do,” Standridge said.
