President Donald Trump during a White House meeting on May 16, 2018, suggested Oakland, California, Mayor Libby Schaaf be investigated for potential obstruction of justice. The Immigration and Customs enforcement (ICE) agency had planned an operation in Oakland to apprehend criminals illegally residing in the United States, which was preemptively announced to the public by Mayor Schaaf on February 24, 2018. Schaaf stated that her actions were to defend law-abiding aliens from being deported, adding, “I believe it is my duty and moral obligation as mayor to give those families fair warning when that threat appears imminent.”

Trump remarked, “I recommend you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland.” Trump suggested that there were around 1,000 individuals in the Oakland area who were potential targets for the ICE operation, with very few being apprehended. Trump commented that “there’s a revolution going on in California—[the residents] want safety … It’s a big deal out there, and a lot of people are very angry about what happened.”
