An Indian woman has given birth to a 15-pound baby girl, which doctors say could be the heaviest in the country’s history, if not in world history.
The mother, 20, gave birth to the baby girl by Caesarean section.
“It is the biggest baby in India, I can say. Whether it is the biggest in the world, I cannot say right now,” Dr Venkatesh R, district health official in Hassan district, told the BBC.
The baby isn’t just heavy, it’s also quite tall.
“The baby’s height is 62cm (24.4in) as against the normal Indian baby’s height of 50cm,” said Dr SR Kumar.
Remarkably, the baby didn’t have diabetes, and neither did her mother, as it’s common for diabetic mothers to give birth to overweight infants.
“We have done an ultrasound and conducted blood tests on Nandini, but we didn’t find any abnormality,” Dr Kumar said.
The previous record for the heaviest Indian baby was a 14.7-pound boy born in November of 2015.
The world record for the heaviest baby ever is an Italian boy born in 1955, weighing in at 22-pounds.
