Thief Jumps Into a River in a Botched Attempt to Evade Police
Police have released footage of a dramatic car chase that ended after the driver ditched the car and waded through an icy river—and into the arms of waiting police.
The video first shows dashcam footage from inside a police car as it gives chase to a red Ford Fiesta through the morning rush hour traffic in Birmingham, England.
The driver, Christopher King, 38, was banned from driving for three years, given a suspended 18-month sentence and 120 hours of unpaid work in a sentencing on Friday, March 9.
Detective Constable Brett Stephenson from West Midlands Police CID, said: “King continued to drive in a dangerous way, during rush hour and with lots of other traffic, pedestrians, and children on their way to school.
“He made every effort to get away, including driving the wrong way around traffic islands, going through red lights, and driving on the wrong side of roads.
“He eventually dumped the car on land near Forth Drive in Chelmsley Wood, fleeing across a river and into Elmore Close, where he was finally arrested.”
The incident occurred at around 8 a.m. on Jan. 26, 2018.
Police used a stinger on the car after it was spotted within an hour of being reported stolen from Sutton Coldfield, West Mids. The stinger caught the front types but King still managed to speed away down residential roads before he ditched the car.
