What do unicorns eat? According to the social media-propelled food trend that recently swept the nation, all things pretty, sparkly, and pastel- or rainbow-hued.

Food writer Rachel Johnson offers her take on the whimsical trend in “Unicorn Food: Magical Recipes for Sweets, Eats, and Treats” (published by Sterling Epicure, $14.95), a colorful collection of 40 sweet and savory, unicorn-inspired creations.

Sprinkles and glitter galore sparkle atop strawberry marshmallows, swirled cupcakes, and galaxy glazed doughnuts, and rainbow-colored treats abound—bread and pasta, pancakes and crepe cakes, and shaved ice all flash red-to-violet hues.

There’s healthy unicorn food, too. Naturally colorful recipes like fruit salad; vegetable bowls, kebabs, and spring rolls; and a refreshing watermelon layer cake balance out the sugar highs.

It’s the kind of fun, joyful, over-the-top food that has to make you smile.
