On the evening of May 4th, a panel of renowned conflict photographers shared their experiences from the battlefield. They got together on short notice at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute to honor their colleagues Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington, whose lives were cut short in Libya on April 20. They also came to raise money for Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an organization that works to ensure the safety of hundreds of journalists in harm’s way.
The panel consisted of Lynsey Addario (Agency VII, Time, National Geographic & The New York Times), Spencer Platt (Getty Images) and Ron Haviv (co-founder VII Photo Agency) and was moderated by former Time contract photographer Bob Nickelsberg.
The sold-out event was a great success and raised $952.16 in proceeds for the RSF Journalist Assistance Fund.
In some countries a journalist can be thrown in prison for years for a single offending word or photo. Jailing or killing a journalist removes a vital witness to events and threatens the right of us all to be informed. Reporters Without Borders has fought for press freedom on a daily basis since it was founded in 1985.
