VAIL, Col.—Cheers erupted from the throngs of spectators as outdoor sports were pushed beyond the established limits at the Teva Mountain Games last weekend in Vail, Colorado. For the past eight years the Games have been an incubator for outdoor sport competition and the athletes and spectators love every last drop of Rocky Mountain excitement.

The event is billed as “the country’s largest celebration of mountain sport, soul and culture.” Athletes and outdoor admirers, amateur and professional unite in Vail every spring for a long weekend of fun and competition. An eclectic mix of outdoor related sports, all with a tight communal nature and a deep appreciation for the outdoors, were on display in Vail. The Games boasted many of the biggest names in the sports of cycling, running, kayaking, rafting, paragliding, fly fishing, dog competition, rafting, climbing, photography, film and more.

The festival-like atmosphere and intense competition make this an event not to be missed. There was something for everyone who enjoys the outdoors.

Located at Vail Village, at the foot of the ski resort and nestled in the Vail Valley, there are few places better to have such a broad tribute to the sports of outdoors.

Waterfalls hundreds of feet tall cascade over cliffs formed by layer upon layer of maroon rock beds, funneling down into Gore creek which makes its tumultuous way into the heart of the Vail Village. Gravity, water and earth are the life blood of the Games. From the boiling rapids to the muddy cross country track the forces of nature are apparent here. They deliberately and meticulously sculpt one’s mind, body, and spirit in a confluence of sport, challenge, and friendship.

Many ties are forged here and many are humbled by the forces of nature that seem so ephemeral and eternal in the Valley.

It is a slow, graceful dance of man and nature in a timeless waltz that is, at best, a mirror for which one’s own insignificance and self-proclaimed omnipotence can be reflected.

If you are interested in the celebration of outdoor sports come join the excitement next year as a competitor or spectator.
