Two teenagers have been charged with malicious mischief for allegedly bragging to friends that they “shot up” an elementary school, after more than 60 shots were fired at the school on New Year’s Eve.
According to court papers the pair went to a New Year’s Eve party bragging about what they had done.
“They came back to the party shortly after midnight bragging that they had shot up Pinewood Elementary School,” Marysville police wrote in a probable cause statement.
Damage to the school has been estimated to be between $35,000 to $55,000. Police said they believe the shooting was vandalism rather than to target anyone in particular.
The shots were fired between 11:55 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and 12:20 a.m. on New Year’s Day—right around the time fireworks would have been going off, police said.
Police said Olson took a gun from his father’s bag and he and Callan fired it at the school.
Four classrooms, the gym, the library, and an office were damaged in the shooting. Bullet casings were found near a playground and a parking lot light was shot out.
Although no one was hurt, Marysville Police Cmdr. Mark Thomas said someone could easily have been hit because the blinds were drawn on the windows.
Bail has been set at $10,000 each, with both Callan and Olson charged with first-degree malicious mischief.
