A Texan teen has achieved what many high school students work hard for. Not only was he accepted by all 20 colleges he applied to — he received full scholarships as well.
Houston’s Lamar High School senior Michael Brown, 17, opened the last of his envelopes last week and was surprised to learn that he got into all 20 of the highly selective colleges he had applied to. He was also offered a combination of merit and financially based scholarships and grants.
Michael received offers from some of the country’s elite schools including Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Princeton, Northwestern, Stanford, Pomona College and Georgetown, to name a few.
His mother Berthinia, a drug counselor, said she had cried knowing that her son had several options to get the education he deserves.
“I cried because I realized that there was a chance that my child would get the education he deserves — the one I could not afford to pay for,” she told the newspaper.
Michael said he wants to major in political science and hopes that he will eventually become a lawyer or public defender.
Most people are wondering how he managed to achieve this. Along with his outstanding grades — a 4.86-grade point average, an SAT score of 1540 out of 1600 and an ACT score of 34 out of 36 — he participated in the school debate team, had done numerous internships and was part of school activities like Key Club.
The 17-year-old boy first became an internet sensation in December after his mother recorded his reaction as he logged onto Stanford’s admissions portal to see if he had been accepted as an early decision. In the video, the teen took a look at the result and screamed for joy.
Berthinia said she hopes for her son to attend Stanford because it had been Michael’s choice for a long time, but she thinks Harvard could be an even better fit for him.
Michael will make his decision on May 1.
