A 7-year-old Oklahoma boy who was bullied over the way he looks now has a new friend—an adopted cat with the exact same rare eye condition and cleft lip.

The cat, called Moon, is a welcoming bundle of comfort for Madden Humphreys who lives “in a world full of bullies and hateful words,” his mother wrote on blogging site Love What Matters.
The boy’s mother, Christina, said that his classmates often pointed out his cleft palate and heterochromia iridum, a rare condition that causes the iris of one eye to be a different color than the other.

When Christina discovered her son was being teased over the condition she said affects only 1 percent of the world’s population, she took immediate action.

“The only thing we can do is try to change our perception on bullies, and try to change the way it affects us,” Christina told her son. “Unfortunately, there will probably always be an unkind person that we’ll encounter. It will always sting and hurt, but we can’t control other people’s behavior, so we will just try our best to change our own mindset.”

Madden also made a video explaining his unique eyes after his mom gave him some encouragement. He also reminded friends to be compassionate. But the mother was not fully convinced that the June 2017 video was enough to make him happy.

When the mother found out a kitten with the same condition was up for condition last week, she pounced on the news.

“Last week, a friend posted an image of the cat in our cleft moms group. This kitty was taken in by a rescue group in Minnesota. We knew immediately that this kitty was meant to be part of our family,“ she wrote, ”Not only does he have a cleft lip like our 7-year-old son Madden, he also has complete heterochromia iridum, like Madden. They were destined to be best friends. Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone.”

Christina said the pair are the “perfect companions for each other.”

“I think it’s safe to say that this kitty is love, and was certainly meant to be part of our journey and Madden’s journey,” she wrote.
