Afghan President Hamid Karzai enjoys support in only a quarter of the areas regarded as strategically important for the war in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. military in a recent report.

In its report to Congress, the Pentagon says that political will to tackle corruption in Afghanistan “remains doubtful.”

The report also showed that between October and March, violence increased by 87 percent compared to the same period the year before. But there are overall signs of progress, such as increased pressure on the Taliban.

President Karzai has recently been criticized again for the alleged election fraud perpetrated last year, his failure to tackle corruption in the country, and outspoken criticism of the West and NATO.

Karzai will visit Washington from May 10-14.
