Like their human masters, police dogs risk their lives in the line of duty.

But students in Ohio, worried about the dangers to a new K-9 unit, have found a way to keep him safe on duty.

Students in Stark County have been raising money to buy a protective vest for a new K-9 unit assigned to a protection officer, with one student even offering his birthday money.

“Whatever that officer asks them to do that’s what they do, and many times we have seen it in the past, where a K-9 is injured or killed because they were protecting their owner or protecting their handler,” Stark County Sheriff’s Office Major C.J. Stantz told Fox 8.

A fifth grade teacher at Lexington Elementary created a project for kids in the school’s ‘Pet Pals’ group to help protect the new recruit.
