A Tennessee high school senior with Down Syndrome is poised to make history as he prepares to graduate with a general education diploma instead of a special education one.

Ben Halvorson, a senior at Bartlett High School, has gone through the same curriculum as a typical high school student.

“I’m just so proud of myself,” Halvorson says in the video.

According to WREG, Halvorson will be the first student in school history with Down Syndrome to graduate with a general education diploma.

“We just had high expectations and a lot of support along the way that made it possible,” says Becky Halvorson, the boy’s mother.

“He has succeeded at every step.”

It is reported Halvorson has plans to go to college, but doesn’t know what he wants to major in yet.
