A Croatian soccer player died at the age of 25 after he was struck in the chest by a ball, according to reports.
Bruno Boban was hit in the chest during Marsonia’s meeting with Slavonija Pozega in the Croatian Third Football League, ABC.net.au reported. After he was hit, he appeared to be fine but later appeared to lose consciousness.
Medics and players then ran onto the field to help him. They tried to revive him for 40 minutes, but he later died on the pitch.
The cause of his death was not yet revealed.
The Mirror, citing a local news report, said that he suffered a “heart attack.”
All players and staff “express deep condolences to the family for this tragic loss,” the team said on Facebook.
“The Croatian Football Association, on behalf of the entire football family, expresses sympathy with Boban’s family, his teammates, and the supporters of the Marsonia clubs and Internacional Kutjevo for this unforgivable loss,” the Croatian Football Federation said in a statement, according to USA Today.
Striker Mario Mandzukic also wrote: “Rest in peace Bruno and my deepest condolences to the Boban family as well as to all his friends and team-mates.”
Other details about his death were not revealed.
