A single mother says she could face $70,000 in fines for her pet dog.
Cobar, who is a mother of four children, adopted a pit bull mix named Stoner. She said that the original owners of the dog had kept him inside a cage for much of his life.
After adopting the animal, Cobar said that he bit the neighbor as well as the neighbor’s dog. He also killed a stray cat in 2017.
“He’s part of our family,” she insisted.
West Orange officials also said that Stoner bit a 12-year-old boy 4 years ago, but Cobar denied those allegations, PIX11 reported.
Stoner was taken away twice by the town, Cobar said, adding that she was told to keep a muzzle on the animal whenever he’s around visitors or when he’s in public.
Cobar said she also had to put up a “beware of dog” sign, put him on a leash, and train him. Also, she was forced to install a six-foot fence in her yard.
She said that after she moved to another place, problems arose. The town said she didn’t have fencing, adding that she could be fined $71,000 for not complying.
“If you want to give me a fine, okay,” she said. “But a $71,000 fine? It’s a lot.”
“I just want to live in peace in this new home,” she said.
Cobar said that a judge told her to come back later with an attorney.
