NEW YORK—Matthew Grace, a business owner, was intrigued by the promise of “China before communism” when he decided to see Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. The result, he said, was inspirational.

“I feel it’s incredibly inspirational, very high standards in terms of dancing and singing and choreography. It’s absolutely beautiful, stunningly beautiful, and I like the message that it’s bringing, the freedom and that only a society that believes in God can be free,” Mr. Grace said after seeing the performance on April 6.

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, with a mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese civilization. It’s a culture the Chinese people held to be divinely inspired, but when communism seized power in 1949, the regime sought to erase traditional culture.
China, under communism, is not a free society, and Mr. Grace said it was horrible that the regime was trying to “crush the spirit” of its people.

“They’re trying to pretend like they’re God, and I think that’s a huge problem,” Mr. Grace said. “I think any society that doesn’t have something higher to believe in than humanity is going to end up in despair and downtrodden.”

Through music and dance, Shen Yun told stories spanning thousands of years, and Mr. Grace said he loved all of the stories because they were all inspirational and conveyed a belief in something higher than humanity.
A musician himself, Mr. Grace said the music of Shen Yun impressed him too.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “It’s not music that I’m used to listening to, but at the same time, it’s incredibly inspiring.”

Shen Yun’s orchestra is unique in the world, as the only ensemble to permanently combine ancient Chinese instruments in a classical orchestra. All of the music is original and composed anew for the all-new production the company puts on each year.

“Once again, the standards are very high,” Mr. Grace added. “I’ve lived in New York my whole adult life and I’ve listened to the best music in the world and the best musicians, and this is right up there.”
