CHICAGO—“The colors and the dancing just—beautiful!” Barbara McGoldrick enthusiastically exclaimed. The retired interior designer had just attended the afternoon presentation of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Cadillac Palace Theatre, Sunday, May 12.

“In a series of story-based performances, Shen Yun recounts ancient myths, bygone heroes, or celestial paradises,” explains the company’s website.

“I just thought the whole production and how they presented it—with the backdrops and [how they] went into the screen—I thought that was just beautiful. The colors the costumes, the singing, everything,” said Ms. McGoldrick

She explained that she had missed Shen Yun when it traveled to Chicago before, but made sure to see the New York-based show this time. “It caught my eye. It was just fabulous! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I missed it several times, but decided I wasn’t going to miss it this time!”

As an interior designer she was amazed by the colors. “Oh, just vibrant! In fact I said, to my friend ... I’ve never seen colors so vibrant, the combination, absolutely beautiful.”

Shen Yun travels the world on a mission to revive a lost treasure, 5,000 years of China’s divinely inspired culture through the universal language of dance and music.

The stories resonated with Ms. McGoldrick. She said, “I thought they were real sweet. Yes very nice.”

She was touched by the opening performance, Descending to the World. “The first one, of course, you’re starstruck by it all. The dancing and the color was pink, there are those colors again.”

Ms. McGoldrick explained that she heard every word and note sung. “I normally wear hearing aids, I took them out. In fact, I took them out for the whole performance.”

“But [one of the vocal soloist’s] voice I have never heard a voice like that. Powerful, beautiful ... that’s the one the word I would use just “beautiful”, and the whole thing, very lovely.”
