Shailene Woodley went on an extreme weight-loss diet for the film “Adrift,” which is based on a true story.

She told the The Times that for the last two weeks of filming, she ate just 350 calories a day: a can of salmon, steamed broccoli and two egg yolks. It left her feeling “miserable.”

“I can’t sleep when I’m hungry, so I would have a glass of wine to [fall asleep],” she said.

In “Adrift,” the 26-year-old actress plays Tami, a woman who sails across the ocean with her fiancé Richard, played by actor Sam Claflin. They planned to travel from Tahiti to San Diego, but on the way they encounter a Category 5 hurricane, which nearly destroys their boat.

They have no working radio and limited food and water for 41 days on the open sea.

Woodley also said “Adrift” was almost entirely filmed on the open ocean, which is very unusual.

“The love that Tami and Richard share is really what this movie is about,” said Woodley in an interview she posted on her Instagram page. “She was determined to survive for him and for herself.”

Claflin reportedly also had to cut down on calories for the film, which brought additional challenges.

“I was on a crash diet from the second I got to Fiji,” he said, according to People. “I wasn’t eating very much and I’d set out and had about three or four coffees first thing in the morning with no food and apparently that’s a recipe for disaster on a boat. Shailene was literally rubbing my back as I was puking over the back.”

“Adrift” is now in theaters.
