Search Called Off for Missing 12-Year-Old Swimmer in Virginia

The search for a 12-year-old swimmer who disappeared off the Virginia shore has been called off with no body.

The search started Saturday, June 16 around 7 p.m. when a child disappeared about 50 yards off Norfolk, Virginia’s Ocean View Pier.

Three children were spotted struggling in the water near the pier Saturday evening. A family member was able to rescue two of the children, WTKR reported, but could not reach the third.

According to the Coast Guard, witnesses saw the child go under water about 50 yards offshore.

The Coast Guard, Norfolk Fire and Rescue, and the Norfolk Police Department all searched for the boy or his body, using divers and an underwater grid search.

The Coast Guard called off its search around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 17, WTVR reported.

Norfolk’s Fire and Rescue and the police department kept on until about 5:45 p.m. Sunday before also calling off their searches.
