Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the most prominent critic of President Donald Trump in the Senate, praised the president’s efforts to address China’s unfair trade practices.

“I don’t agree with President Trump on a whole lot, but today I want to give him a big pat on the back. He is doing the right thing when it comes to China,” he said on the Senate floor on Thursday.

“China is ruthless in how they go after the United States. They do it quietly. They do it with a smile.”

Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum on Thursday directing the U.S. Trade Representative and the Department of Treasury to propose plans to impose new tariffs and investment restrictions to retaliate against China’s unfair trade practices.

The new tariffs on Chinese imports could be about $60 billion annually, according to Trump.

“Unfortunately previous presidents—Democrat and Republican—just stood by as China did what it did to us. President Trump is exactly right,” Schumer said.

“I have called for such action for years and been disappointed by the inactions of both President Bush and Obama. I’m very pleased that this administration is taking strong action to get a better deal on China.”
