A suspected serial rapist in California who formerly drove for Lyft—subsequently dubbed the “Rideshare Rapist” in the media—is an illegal alien, officials said.

Orlando Vilchez Lazo, 36, was charged by the San Francisco district attorney’s office with four rapes of women while posing as a ride-share driver. Lyft spokeswoman Kate Margolis told The Associated Press that the company is investigating Lazo’s employment history. Company officials “have no reason to believe these incidents occurred” while he was on duty for the firm, she added.
Lazo was “citizen of Peru illegally present in the U.S.,” said the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) in a statement, according to SFGate. It had lodged a detainer, or hold, on Lazo in the San Francisco County Jail.

ICE also blasted San Francisco’s policy of not honoring the agency’s holds, saying it effectively “shields criminal aliens who prey on the community.”

“ICE maintains that cooperation by local law enforcement is an indispensable component of promoting public safety,” the ICE statement said. “The San Francisco jail does not honor ICE detainers nor notify ICE about the impending release of aliens in its custody. In doing so, the jail not only provides a refuge for illegal aliens, but it also shields criminal aliens who prey on people in the community.”

Lazo is accused of three rapes in 2018 and one rape in 2013. Commander Greg McEachren said he would wait outside bars at night and drove to other places, Fox News reported.

SFGate also reported that Vilchez Lazo is being held at the San Francisco Jail on $4.2 million bail. If convicted, he could spend life in prison.
