A rare pink diamond broke the world record for most expensive diamond ever sold, at an auction in Switzerland Tuesday.

The 24.78-carat fancy intense pink diamond, mounted on a ring, sold for $46 million.

The Sotheby auction house said the ring was purchased by London-based jeweler, Laurence Graff.

“I’ve never seen a more fabulous diamond and I am delighted to have acquired it,” Graff said after buying the diamond, according to Sotheby.

The rare stone was expected to sell for between $27 and $38 million. The diamond was last seen on the market 60 years ago, according to AFP.

According to David Bennett head of Sotheby’s jewelry department, the sale “demonstrates that tonight’s extraordinary objects command extraordinary prices.”

The previous record for the most expensive diamond sold was a fancy deep grayish blue diamond, which sold for $24.3 million in 2008.
