A 2-year-old boy has died after he drowned in an apartment pool on Saturday, March 17, in Birmingham, Alabama.
The toddler allegedly drove his mini-4-wheeler toy into an apartment complex pool located on the 600 block of Earline Circle, according to Fox affiliate WBRC.
Authorities said the pool was not properly fenced and that there was a breach allowing the child to drive his toy inside.
Emergency first responders rushed the scene after they received a call at 5:22 p.m.
The boy received CPR before he was transported to St. Vincent’s East hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, CBS42 reported.
Birmingham Police Department Lt. Pete Williston says no foul play is suspected.
The pool was not open for the season yet, according to the Birmingham News. The toy wheeler was found just at the edge of the water.
Some commenters on social media questioned where the parents of the child were at the time of the incident.
“There was a breach in the fence. It wasn’t connected all the way around the pool. But the bigger question was where was the adult supervision?” one person wrote on Facebook. “Child could have been run over darting between cars or kidnapped. This lies solely on whomever was responsible for watching the child. Such a shame. Im praying for the family.”
“Improperly fenced. improperly watched” another person commented.
“No responsibility in looking after this child, very sad,” one person wrote.
But one person also pointed out how easily children can disappear from view, even when parents are present.
“Remember as parents that toddlers can slip away. When parents run west searching, the child may be running east just playing. If negligence is found, then criticize. If a toddler wandered away as many do, my sympathy,” another person wrote.
The investigation is ongoing. More details on this story have not yet been released.
