A body pulled out of a river last weekend is believed to be that of a young girl, police said.
A fisherman made the discovery on the Yellow River in Georgia, on Saturday, March 3. He found the body in Newton County.
Campbell said he was out fishing when he spotted something hung up on some tree branches in the river.
“I motored over it, and I saw the heel of a person, and initially thought it was a mannequin. I got downwind of it and could tell it wasn’t a mannequin and that’s when I said it’s time to call 911,” he told WSB-TV.
At the time he said he could not tell if it was a man or a woman. Campbell said the body seemed to have been in the river for some time already.
Police said the body has no identifying scars, marks, or tattoos.
“Efforts were made to remove the body from the river, but darkness and time of day along with the situation in which the body was located and the rapid movement of the river made it difficult to remove,” Alexander said. “The decision was made to post a deputy at the scene and return at daylight on March 4.
The remains were first sent to the Newton County Coroner’s Office, then to the GBI Crime Lab.
As of writing the cause of death had not been determined. The body also still remains unidentified.
Authorities are trying to connect the body with any missing person reports.
“Currently we are looking into any missing persons, not only with our agency but with any local agencies in the area, to find out if in fact we have any missing person reports,” Newton County Sheriff’s Deputy Latavia Washington told WSB-TV.
