Four Canadians and two Mexicans were killed in Playa del Carmen from a natural gas explosion that happen in a hotel on Sunday. Among the dead is one 9-year-old Canadian boy, The Canadian Press reports. The incident took place at the Grand Riviera Princess hotel located in Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

“I looked and you could see that the roof had collapsed. There was a large crater in the area, debris,” Canadian tourist James Gaade told The Canadian Press. Gaade estimates 50 to 70 percent of the guests at the hotel are Canadians.

Officials say the initial investigation is looking at whether natural gas building up beneath the hotel caused the explosion. Quintana Roo state Attorney General Francisco Alor Quezada said that he believes decomposing organic waste generated a natural gas buildup that led to the explosion, according to AFP.
