Finnish researchers created a backpack-mounted scanner designed to map changes in the structure of an underground nuclear disposal site. The technology will aid in monitoring the site once opened and is even able to provide an accurate location without the use of GPS.

“The main innovation of this system is that we manage to obtain a model, a map, in real time,” explained Vitor Sequeira, Project Leader of Innovative Safeguards R&D at the European Commission’s research centre (JRC).

The technology collects data obtained from a scanner and utilizes a reference model to provide a location. In the future, researchers hope to teach it to do the same work without a reference model.

Such technology has many potential uses according to the researchers; such as the preservation of cultural heritage.
