A new service was unveiled on Monday which alerts New Yorkers via e-mail, text messages, fax, or telephone if a high-risk or moderate sex offender moves into their community.

Residents can sign up for free and can also get alerts if a sex offender moves near family members or other communities of interest. The service is provided by the state’s NY-ALERT system and draws upon the database of sex offenders kept by the New York State Sex Offender Registry. Residents can get up to three alerts based on zip code, specific address, or by county/municipality.

The alert radius around the area can range from one-fourth of a mile to 25 miles.

Approximately 30,000 sex offenders are registered in New York. More information can be found at criminaljustice.state.nys.us.
