A Nebraskan woman was charged after a police officer found her young children alone in a filthy home filled with broken dishes, unwashed clothes, drug paraphernalia and a lack of fresh food, according to court documents.

Jessica Dailey, 30, from South Sioux City was taken into custody on March 19 and subsequently charged with four counts of felony child abuse, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, reported Sioux City Journal.

Four children were discovered to be living in the home after a South Sioux City police officer stopped to talk to a 6-year-old girl walking alone and looking lost at East Ninth and B streets on March 11. The girl told him she was going to the store to buy something with some pennies, according to a police affidavit.

The officer decided to accompany the girl to the store. He then gave her a lift to her home in the 300th block of East 10th Street. The girl told the officer that she and her siblings — aged 9, 8 and 2 — had been left in the care of her mother’s friends and that her mother had not come home.

The officer walked the girl to the front door and entered the house to speak with an adult. Inside the home, the officer said he saw dirty dishes filling the sink, leftover food on the floor, dirty clothes, and broken dishes left around the home. He also reportedly seeing something that looked like feces on the table. The girl’s two older siblings were not present at the time of the officer’s visit, reported the journal.

According to court documents, there was no fresh food in the cupboards. The 6-year-old girl told the officer that her 2-year-old sibling was naked because she had no diapers.

The officer was not able to find any adults at the home. However, he did discover drug paraphernalia, including a pipe that tested positive for methamphetamine, scattered in several rooms.

The 9-year-old and 8-year-old children arrived home when the officers were present and confirmed to them that they were alone, according to the police. One of the children said he had stepped on a nail two weeks ago but had not received the appropriate medical care, reported Sioux City Journal.

All four children have been removed from the home by police and placed in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Dailey is currently being held in jail on a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 17, reported the journal.

In a similar case, a 42-year-old mother was sentenced to almost a year in jail in January 2018 for keeping her children in a dirty home, reported the Sioux City Journal. Jennifer Corrin was arrested in July and pleaded no contest to the charges in November, last year. Her five children, aged between five and 18, were living in the home that was ridden with trash, rotting food, dog feces and dirty clothes, also lacking food in the fridge and cupboards.
