NATO’s chief said on Monday that there is no alternative to continuing military operations in Afghanistan.
“I consider it of utmost importance to continue our military operations because the fact is it is the increasing military pressure on the Taliban and the Taliban leadership that has stimulated the reconciliation talks,” NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a news conference on Monday in Brussels, according to Reuters.
Rasmussen’s remarks come just days ahead of a NATO summit in Lisbon, Portugal, that will lay out to the alliance its new strategy in Afghanistan.
The summit will mark a “fundamentally new phase in NATO’s operation in Afghanistan … [in] which the Afghan government will take the lead for security throughout the country,” according to a NATO statement.
