Elon Musk is leading a project to bring high-speed transit to O’Hare International Airport. The goal? To get from the Loop to O’Hare in just 12 minutes.

The plan calls for electric cars traveling underground at 150 mph. Each car will hold up to 16 passengers. Musk’s Boring Company will drill tunnels beneath existing buildings to reach O’Hare.

Musk is on a mission to show people that new technologies are useful, saying:

“One of the hottest things to do with any new technology is not to demonstrate that technology and show that it works, but to show people that it can be useful. It’s one of the hardest things in the world, to make something useful, where the revenue exceeds the cost of the thing that was done. That’s what we intend to do here in Chicago.”

The project is expected to begin by the end of the year and will be privately funded.
