Over 1,000 jobs are expected to be cut by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

The MTA said that 450 subway station agents and 600 administrative workers will be laid off.

The cuts, the MTA estimates, will save the agency around $50 million as they try to close an over $1 billion budget gap.

This summer, the MTA is also expected to release several hundred bus drivers. The State Budget Office said earlier this month that tax revenues aimed at boosting MTA’s income fell short.

The Transit Workers Union, which represents the station agents, said they will take action in preventing the layoffs. The union added that less service agents puts more subway riders in danger.
