HONG KONG—Craigengower Cricket Club (CCC) successfully defended their Triples League title and saved their other team in Division 1 from relegation after the last matches of the season were completed last Saturday, Feb 24 however, two of their teams in the lower division were also relegated.
CCC-B, who moved into the lead for the first time this season after completing eight matches, had a two points cushion going into the final match. They played at home against mid-tabled Police team whose only target was to help ex-New Zealand squad member Dave Hanson to win the best skip title.
The team skipped by Lee Ka Ho has no problem dispatching Milo Lai 25:7. In addition, Stanley Lai, who was second on the skip table, also easily defeated Andy Chan 25:10. This moved Lai level on point with Hanson.
Hanson was 14:3 down after the eighth end but the match took a dramatic turn when he scored a total of 12 shots in the following four ends to surpass Lui. It was tight from then on and the score was tied at 16:16 into the last end.
Hanson was down when he had only two bowls left. He tried to draw but his bowl hit other bowls in front, wicked into the head, and became the shot. Lui intended to take out this shot with his last bowl but only made the slightest contact with it. The shot remained at the same position and Hanson won the best skip award.
Elsewhere, KCC only managed a 5-3 win at home against bottom team Hong Kong Football Club and lost the title to CCC.
At the bottom, CCC-A were in need of an 8-0 victory to save themselves from relegation. Any result short of this scoreline would mean that their opponent Kowloon Bowling Green Club would survive the drop.
Two of the CCC teams had already won their respective matches, the final destiny fell on the result of the match between Kevin Fung (CCC) and Ye Sui Ying (KBGC). Fung was leading 16:13 into the last end but when he only had his last bowl to play, he was down four shots on the green. He drew his last bowl with perfect weight and became the shot. CCC-A finished eighth and KBGC was relegated.
There was not much luck for CCC-C in Division 2 and CCC-D in Division 5 as they both finished ninth and were relegated.
For other divisions, it was a good season for Tuen Mun Sports Club as they won the titles in Division 4 and 7. Filipino Club also did well with the Division 5 title and promotion in Division 6.
In addition to CCC, other teams suffering relegation are, KBGC, Hong Kong Electric and Victoria Club all have two team relegated.
This weekend will see the last matches for the men’s bottom three divisions and the final games for the women. All games will start at 3pm this weekend.
