‘Miraculous’ Moment Truck Goes on Wrong Side of Road As Driver Falls Asleep
Dashcam footage shows the moment a truck plowed through the central barrier and into the oncoming traffic lane on a busy 3-lane highway after the driver fell asleep.
British police released the video after the driver was convicted of dangerous driving, saying it was “miraculous” that there were not more serious injuries.
The driver, Michael Hughes, 63, of Dunster Road, Stoke-on-Trent, fell asleep on the M62 motorway, in the north of England on Sept. 7, 2017, and was panicked and disorientated when he woke up, which caused him to keep driving, according to local reports.
He was later diagnosed with sleep apnea after the incident on Sept. 7, 2016, but was still sentenced to 9 months jail on Jan. 15.
Despite the truck veering at speed toward oncoming traffic and then driving on the wrong side for several minutes, the incident only caused one collision between two other vehicles.
“While one driver has been left with lasting injuries as a result of Hughes’ driving, it is miraculous that no one was more seriously hurt during this incident,” Police Constable Kurt Timpson said in a Merseyside Police statement.
“After colliding with the central reservation, Hughes had plenty of time to stop the vehicle and seek assistance but chose to continue his journey on the wrong side of the road, putting dozens of others drivers lives in danger.”
Merseyside Police released this footage as a warning to motorists of the dangers of driving while tired.
