An Ohio barnyard caught ablaze and quickly erupted into a massive fire on Tuesday. More than 5,000 pigs were killed, WWMT reported.
The fire at the barnyard in Fayette County was reported just after 1 p.m. local time.
Initially, the Wayne Township Fire Department were dispatched, but reinforcements were soon needed as the fire intensified.
Firefighters from Fayette, Ross, Highland, Pickaway, and Green counties assisted in the effort to put out the blaze.
The Fayette County Sheriffs Office said in a Facebook post: “The fire spread quickly throughout the facility causing intense heat and extremely heavy smoke, making it difficult for fire personnel to battle the interior of the fire.”
One firefighter was taken to Fayette County Memorial Hospital after sustaining an arm injury. He was treated at the hospital and was later released.
A Facebook user said: “Prayers for the firefighters, first responders, the family, and pray the animals died quickly and did not suffer! Stay safe.”
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
