Chile recovered from a massive electricity blackout on Monday. The blackout occurred on Sunday night affecting 90 percent of the country.
It was caused by a damaged transformer on Chile’s main power grid. Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera said on Monday that the damaged transformer was the result of the massive earthquake that hit the country two weeks ago, and that although the electricity supply has been restored, he said supplies will continue to be unstable for the next week.
With memories of the devastating 8.8 earthquake and aftershocks that hit Chile still fresh, many people were afraid that another earthquake had struck. In the Chilean capital Santiago, thousands of people were evacuated from the metro. The blackout also put a benefit concert in Santiago for the quake victims in the dark.
