At least 75 paramilitary Indian police officers were killed in central India by Maoist rebels on Tuesday.

The security forces were ambushed by hundreds of heavily armed fighters from a hilltop. Bombs planted by the Maoist rebels in places where the troops might take cover resulted in the bulk of the casualties. Gunfire and landmines were used to attack rescue teams.

“Something has gone very wrong. They seem to have walked into a trap set by the Naxalites (Maoists). Casualties are quite high and I am deeply shocked,” said India’s Home Minister P. Chidabaram. He said the attack showed the “savage nature of the Maoists.”

Thousands of people have died as a result of the Maoist rebels fight for communist rule. The attacks come two days after 10 police officers were killed in an attack on a police bus in Eastern India.
