Nelson Mandela won’t attend the opening ceremony of the soccer World Cup finals in South Africa in June.

Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, told AFP that his grandfather is very elderly and would prefer to be watch the tournament from his home in the countryside.

President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Sepp Blatter, has expressed hope that Mandela will be strong enough to attend the Cup finals as a guest of honor.

“We cross fingers that Nelson Mandela can realize this dream,” Blatter said, according to AFP.

Mandla also told reporters that when watching the games, his grandfather doesn’t feel comfortable unless the team is ahead 2-0.
