A man shot himself in the hand as he showed his friends how fast he could clean his gun, police have said.

The man, 23, was showing his friends how to clean a Springfield XD 9 mm at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5, according to the Omaha World Herald.

He demonstrated the “proper way” to take apart a gun to his two friends, aged 23 and 25, in his kitchen at his home west of 72nd Street, Omaha, Nebraska.

According to KETV, friends witnessed the 23-year-old holding the muzzle to his own hand, then pulling the trigger to show the gun was clear. However, the gun was not clear and he fired a round into his hand.

The two friends drove him to Immanuel Medical Center, where he arrived at around 7 p.m.

The man told police that he was showing his friends how fast he could clean his gun, KETV reported. He said he is a keen hunter and has experience with firearms.

Police have booked the gun for safekeeping.

Last September, a 100-year-old New York man shot himself in the leg by accident.

When Pedro Detres took out his unregistered .32-caliber revolver, it went off and hit him in the thigh.

His neighbor Ricardo Rodriguez said the centenarian had mentioned that he wanted to die.

“We didn’t know he had a gun. But he’s fine, he’s not crazy or anything. He’s just a little eccentric. I don’t know why he did that,” Rodriguez told the New York Daily News.
A police source told the New York Post he did not purchase the gun recently. “He just said he obtained it many, many years ago. God knows how long ago that was,” the source said.
