A man accused of murdering and dismembering a mother-of-three, and then dumping her in a recycling bin, has been sentenced to almost 28 years behind bars.

John Charlton, 39, was sentenced at King County Supreme Court for killing 40-year-old Ingrid Lyne from Seattle, who he met through an online dating site.

Superior Court Judge Julie Spector said she would have given Charlton a tougher sentence if she had been able under the state guidlines.

“Nothing can soften the cruelty with which you carried out this murder,” the judge said to Charlton in court, KIRO 7 reported.
“He deserves more,” Phil Lyne, Lyne’s ex-husband said in court, according to CBS News.

“You’ve taken our daughters’ caring compassionate mother whom I respected very much. Once again John, you have taken something that was not yours to take,” Lyne told Charlton.

He recalled the moment he told his three young daughters that their mother had been murdered.

“There was me telling them that mommy had died this weekend,” he said. “And someone had hurt her so badly that she died. Then came the screaming and crying.”

Charlton had been dating Lyne for about a month, and the pair had gone to a baseball game before she went missing last April, CBS News reported.

Charlton said he was too drunk to remember what had happened, but that he had ended up sleeping on a sidewalk.

Investigators said that Charlton strangled her, used a saw to dismember her and put her remains in bags, before driving her car to Seattle to dump her body parts.

Police found a 15-inch pruning saw near her bathtub and an empty box of bags that were the same type as those used to dump her remains in the Seattle recycling bin.

A homeowner in Seattle discovered what he believed to be body parts in three bags stuffed in his recyling bin in Seattle in April 9.

The medical examiner found the human remains belonged to Lyne.

Charlton broke into tears in court on Friday, Jan. 5, and said, “There are no words that can alleviate the pain that I caused, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
