An illegal immigrant has been accused of raping and impregnating a non-verbal special needs girl while babysitting her at a home in Maryland.

Reynaldo Mora, 41, was arrested on April 19 and charged with sex abuse of a minor and two counts of second-degree rape, reported Fox News.

In February, the victim’s family asked Mora to babysit their 13-year-old daughter and her two siblings. During that time, police allege the 41-year-old forced the 13-year-old girl to have sexual intercourse with him in a bedroom.

In mid-April, the girl took a pregnancy test which came back positive. In a later test, a medical center confirmed that she was 11-weeks pregnant.

The young girl, who has the intellect of a first grader and only communicates with hand gestures and writing, told police Mora was the father of the unborn child, reported WJLA.

Mora was denied bail and was held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility in Clarksburg for seven weeks after his bond was denied.

In late May, Jose Campos, Mora’s attorney, filed a motion to reconsider his bond.

In a second bond hearing on June 1, Judge Steven Salant granted Mora a personal recognizance bond—a bond that doesn’t require Mora to put up money to get bail—and in return, he would agree to make future court appearances, Fox News reported.

However, due to a detainer filed by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), local law enforcement had to hand Mora over to federal agents on June 6. ICE confirmed Mora was an undocumented immigrant but did not reveal how he came into the country. Court documents show Mora was born in Mexico, reported WJLA.

Mora’s defense attorney told the news station that his client is innocent and suggested that someone else was responsible for the crime.

“He willingly submitted to a DNA test and he is hopeful that this DNA test is going to clear everything,” Campos said.

According to Mora’s attorney, the 41-year-old has no prior criminal record.

Results for the paternity tests are still pending, according to the news station.

He will appear in Montgomery County Circuit Court in October for a three-day trial. If he is convicted, Mora could be sentenced to up to 60 years in prison.
