Kate Middleton, the longtime girlfriend of Britain’s Prince William, and the prince are set to marry next year, according to the Daily Mail on Tuesday.

Middleton, 28, met William nine years ago while they were attending St. Andrews University.

According to the Mail, the couple became engaged in Kenya last month and the wedding will be in the “spring or summer.” William, 28, asked Middleton’s father for her hand in marriage to which he replied yes.

Prime Minister David Cameron was one of the first to congratulate the two, according to The Sun. He said that their engagement is “a great day for our country [and] a great day for the Royal family and obviously a great day for Prince William and for Kate.”

According to the BBC, Middleton’s parents run a mail-order business which sells games and toys for children’s parties.

Overall, her family is an “ordinary middle-class” one from Berkshire.

“Kate is an absolutely phenomenal girl - really popular, talented, creative and sporty,” former classmate Charlie Leslie told the BBC. “She was captain of the school hockey team and played in the first pair at tennis.”

Middleton, since she started a relationship with Prince William, has been under intense media scrutiny and a often a topic in UK tabloids.

According to the Mail, their wedding is expected to be the biggest royal wedding since Prince Charles and Diana got married in 1981.

After the two are married, they will live in North Wales, and Prince William will continue to serve in the Royal Air Force.
